Customizing a photo with AI

Describe the change you want in your own words, add reference images and target a specific area of the photo.

Written by Sophie Delpech

In brief

The Customize with AI tool lets you describe in a few sentences the exact result you want to get on your photo.

You write your request, add up to 3 reference images if needed, and you can draw an area to limit the change to a specific spot. Danim then generates a new version of your photo.

It is especially useful for retouches the other tools don't offer, or to save time: replace a piece of furniture, add an item, change the style of a kitchen…

The result depends on how you word your request, the quality of the photo and the reference images provided. The AI interprets your request: a first attempt is not always exactly what you expected. Feel free to refine your request and start a new retouch.

Before you start

Your photo must be added to a project. If it isn't yet, see the article Getting started with AI photo retouching.

Customizing a photo with AI

Step 1: Open the Customize with AI tool

Open your project, click the photo you want to retouch, then click Customize with AI in the left menu, just after Decorate.

Step 2: Describe your request

In the text field, describe clearly and precisely:

  • what you want to change: remove, add, replace, transform;

  • what you want to keep as it is.

Your request can contain up to 5,000 characters. Examples scroll through the field to inspire you.

Examples: "Replace the sofa with this sofa model", "Use this image as inspiration to change the style of the kitchen", "Make the room brighter and more contemporary".

Step 3: Add reference images (optional)

You can attach up to 3 reference images to guide the AI on the style, the expected result or the items to include: a sofa model, a kitchen atmosphere, a floor covering…

Step 4: Target an area (optional)

Click Draw an area, then paint the part of the photo to change. You can make several strokes, but they form a single area. Your request will only apply to that spot.

For example: paint the spot on the floor, then ask "Add a blue sofa".

Without an area, your request applies to the whole photo. Clear area deletes the drawn area.

Step 5: Send your request and download your photo

Click Send. Before generating your photo, the AI checks what is feasible in the room. The tool is designed not to apply unrealistic requests: for example, if you ask to add a pool and the AI considers it impossible without changing the structure of the photo, it does not add it. It then generates a new version of your photo with what is feasible.

Once the retouch is complete, the field, the reference images and the area are cleared. Click Before / After to compare with the original photo. The history keeps every version of the photo.

If you are happy with the result, you can add a watermark with the Watermark tool (see the article Adding a watermark to your retouched photos), then download the photo from the … menu on the photo, or all the photos in the project with Export all images.

FAQ

1. How do I write a good request?

Always specify:

  • what you want to remove: "Remove the red car in front of the house";

  • what you want to add or change: "Replace it with an empty parking space";

  • what you want to keep: "Keep the facade and the garden exactly as in the original photo".

Avoid requests that are too vague ("improve the image"), contradictory or too numerous at once: they can lead to an unpredictable result.

2. What can I do if the result doesn't match my request?

You can:

  • go back to the previous version with the history;

  • reword your request more precisely (size, color, location, items to keep);

  • draw an area to show the AI exactly where to work.

Feel free to try several times to find the ideal result.

3. How do I delete a photo from a project?

Open the photo, click the … menu on the photo, then choose Delete image.

Best practices 🎓

  • One request = one main change: for several changes, proceed in several steps.

  • Use reference images to show precisely the furniture or atmosphere you are looking for.

  • Draw an area when the change concerns only one spot in the photo.

  • Always check the result with Before / After before publishing.
