Decorating or furnishing a room with AI photo retouching

Furnish an empty room or redecorate a furnished room, indoors or outdoors, to help your future buyers picture themselves there.

Written by Sophie Delpech

In brief

The Decorate tool lets you:

  • furnish an empty room to reveal its potential;

  • redecorate an already furnished room by modernizing the furniture and atmosphere;

  • design an outdoor space (garden, terrace, balcony…), with the option to add a pool or a spa.

You choose the room type and a decoration style, or an inspiration image, and you can indicate which items in the photo to keep. The AI keeps the structure of the room: viewpoint, walls and openings.

Before you start

Your photo must be added to a project. If it isn't yet, see the article Getting started with AI photo retouching.

Decorating or furnishing a room with AI photo retouching

Step 1: Open the Decorate tool

Open your project, click the photo you want to retouch, then click Decorate in the left menu.

Step 2: Choose the room type you want

Indicate the room you want to get. You can choose from rooms of the same kind as the photo: indoor or outdoor.

  • You have a photo of a living room and want to turn it into a bedroom: select Bedroom.

  • You have a photo of a kitchen and simply want to redecorate it: select Kitchen.

Step 3: Choose a style or a reference image

Select a decoration style. This choice is required.

  • Indoor styles: Modern, Contemporary, Classic, Industrial, Scandinavian, Minimalist, Bohemian, Rustic, Chalet, Seaside and Haussmann.

  • Outdoor styles: Modern, Classic, Scandinavian, Industrial, Vintage, Country chic, Mediterranean, Japanese and Colorful.

Commercial premises have a shorter list of styles.

You can also import a reference image, for example an interior photo that inspires you. It then replaces the chosen style.

For an indoor photo, you can also choose a color palette. By default, it is set to Automatic.

Step 4: Indicate the items to keep

To keep certain items from the original photo, such as a beautiful fireplace or stone walls:

  • select them from the items offered;

  • and/or click Draw an area, then brush over the areas to keep. Correct erases part of the drawing, and you can adjust the brush size.

Step 5: Add a pool or a spa (outdoor)

For an outdoor photo, you can enable Add a pool and/or Add a spa / hot tub.

The AI only adds the pool or spa if there is enough space in the photo, to keep a realistic result.

Step 6: Start decorating and download your photo

Click Decorate. Once the retouch is complete, click Before / After to compare with the original photo. The history keeps every version of the photo.

After each retouch, the tool goes back to its default settings: for a new attempt, choose your options again.

If you are happy with the result, you can add a watermark with the Watermark tool (see the article Adding a watermark to your retouched photos), then download the photo from the … menu on the photo, or all the photos in the project with Export all images.

FAQ

1. Is the Decorate tool available in all Danim plans?

No. AI photo retouching, which includes the Decorate tool, is available with the Premium and Elite plans.

2. Can I decorate an outdoor photo (garden, terrace, balcony)?

Yes. The Decorate tool offers 9 outdoor styles, and you can add a pool or a spa / hot tub.

3. Why didn't the AI add all the expected furniture?

The AI only places furniture that actually fits in the visible space, to keep a realistic result. On a very tightly framed indoor photo, only the walls, floor and kitchen fronts can be changed.

4. Why don't the windows have curtains?

The decoration styles do not add curtains, to keep the windows clear and the room bright.

5. Why did my settings disappear after the retouch?

After each retouch, the tool goes back to its default settings. Choose your style, palette and items to keep again before starting a new retouch.

6. The AI changed the structure of the room, what should I do?

On dark photos or photos taken with a wide-angle lens, the AI may still change the structure of the room. Try a brighter or more tightly framed photo, and use the items to keep to protect the walls or openings.

7. What can I do if I'm not happy with the result?

You can:

  • go back to a previous version with the history;

  • change the style, palette or items to keep, then start a new retouch;

  • delete the generated photo from the … menu of the photo.

8. The retouch is slow, is this normal?

The retouch time varies depending on the quality and size of the photo, and on the complexity of the room. Let the retouch finish before starting a new action.

9. How do I delete a photo from a project?

Open the photo, click the … menu on the photo, then choose Delete image.

Best practices 🎓

  • Take care with your shots: use sharp, well-framed photos with good lighting. The better the starting photo, the more convincing the result.

  • Use the items to keep to preserve the property's strong points (parquet floor, fireplace, large windows) and prevent the AI from replacing them.

  • To get a specific atmosphere, import a reference image rather than a style.

  • Always check your before / after images before sharing them, to make sure the result stays consistent with the reality of the property.

  • For transparency, mention in the listing when a photo has been edited with AI, especially if the layout of the property has been visually changed.
