Using the magic eraser in AI photo retouching

Remove an unwanted object, declutter a room or empty it completely in just a few clicks with AI.

Written by Sophie Delpech

In brief

The Magic eraser lets you remove an unwanted object from a photo in just a few clicks (boxes, cables, signs, personal items…), automatically declutter a room or empty it completely.

You choose what the AI should remove, and Danim generates a new version of your photo, ready for your listings and social media.

It is the ideal tool to showcase a property without any work, while staying transparent about the changes made.

Before you start

Your photo must be added to a project. If it isn't yet, see the article Getting started with AI photo retouching.

Using the magic eraser in AI photo retouching

Step 1: Open the Magic eraser

Open your project and click the photo you want to retouch. The retouching space opens directly on the Magic eraser. If you were using another tool, click Magic eraser in the left menu.

Then choose one of the three modes: Manual, Declutter or Empty the room.

Step 2: Remove a specific object (Manual mode)

In Manual mode, you tell the AI yourself what it should remove.

Click Draw, then brush over the item to remove: the area turns red. Correct lets you erase part of your drawing, and you can adjust the brush size.

To specify the expected result, you can also write an instruction in the Describe what you need (optional) field. For example: "Only remove the boxes on the floor" or "Remove the lamp without changing the wall".

Finally, click Erase. The button becomes active as soon as you have drawn an area or written an instruction: an instruction alone, without drawing, is enough.

Step 3: Declutter a room

In Declutter mode, the AI tidies the room automatically, without you needing to draw.

To keep certain items, select them from the items offered and/or draw an area on the photo. Then click Erase.

The result of this mode remains an interpretation by the AI: to remove a specific object, use Manual mode instead.

Step 4: Empty the room

In Empty the room mode, the AI removes the furniture and objects from the room while keeping its structure: walls, floors, ceilings, windows, doors and openings.

This mode is useful to start from an empty room before furnishing it with the Decorate tool.

Step 5: Check and download your photo

Once the retouch is complete, click Before / After to compare with the original photo. The history keeps every version of the photo: you can go back to a previous version at any time.

If you are happy with the result, you can add a watermark with the Watermark tool (see the article Adding a watermark to your retouched photos), then download the photo from the … menu on the photo, or all the photos in the project with Export all images.

FAQ

1. The "Erase" button stays grayed out, what should I do?

The Erase button becomes active as soon as you have drawn an area on the photo or written an instruction in the Describe what you need (optional) field. Check that your drawing appears in red, or type an instruction.

2. Can I erase an object without drawing?

Yes. In Manual mode, a written instruction is enough, for example "Remove the car in front of the house". For a more precise result, combine the instruction with a drawn area.

3. What is the difference between Declutter and Empty the room?

Declutter tidies the room by removing unnecessary objects, and lets you choose the items to keep. Empty the room removes all furniture and objects to keep only the structure of the room.

4. The AI didn't remove all the objects or changed items I wanted to keep, what should I do?

The result depends on the quality and angle of the photo, how cluttered the room is and how precise your areas are. The AI may keep items it considers part of the structure, or approximately rebuild areas hidden by furniture. To improve the result:

  • for a specific object, use Manual mode with a well-defined area around the item;

  • avoid areas that are too large and include large pieces of furniture or the edges of the room;

  • feel free to try several times, adjusting your selections.

5. Can I undo a removal if I'm not happy with the result?

Yes. Open the history below the photo and select the previous version.

6. How do I delete a photo from a project?

Open the photo, click the … menu on the photo, then choose Delete image.

7. The retouch is taking a while, is this normal?

Processing can take a few moments, especially with large photos. Let the retouch finish before starting a new action.

Best practices 🎓

  • Work from sharp, well-exposed photos taken from a steady angle.

  • For small objects or details (cables, handles, small decorations), use a fine brush.

  • Add a written instruction to specify what must remain unchanged, for example "without changing the wall".

  • Always check the result with Before / After before using the photo in your listings.

Keywords: erase an item, eraser, remove imperfections, clean up the photo, hide an object, declutter, empty a room, car, vehicle, trash can, power outlet, light switch, stain, crack, overlooking view.
