How to choose the right format (ratio) for each social network

Square, landscape, portrait or reduced portrait: which ratio to use for each social network and each type of post.

Written by Sophie Delpech

In brief

You no longer have to choose a format: Danim automatically generates your video or image in all the formats offered by the template.

When you post or schedule, Danim selects the best-suited format for you based on the social network and the post type (post, Reel, Story, and so on). You can always change it with Change format.

Downloading your project to use it elsewhere (website, real estate software, agency screen)? The guide below helps you choose the right format.

The format chosen automatically when posting

  • Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, standard post: Reduced portrait 4:5.

  • Instagram and Facebook, Reel and Story: Portrait 9:16.

  • TikTok: Portrait 9:16.

If a better-suited format exists for your project, the Optimize playback box tells you.

Click Change format to choose another of your project's formats.

Format guide: uses and platforms

Square 1:1

Ideal for: the news feed.

Where to post:

  • Instagram: main News feed (standard post).

  • LinkedIn: posts in the news feed (very effective for B2B engagement).

  • Facebook: News feed (desktop and mobile).

  • Twitter / X: News feed.

  • Google Business Profile: posts and updates visible on Google Search and Google Maps

    💡 For real estate professionals
Google Business Profile is particularly useful for sharing your local news: a new listing, a property to discover, an event, agency news or real estate advice.
For media added to your profile, Google recommends in particular a photo resolution of 720 × 720 px. Videos can last up to 30 seconds, weigh up to 75 MB and must have a resolution of at least 720p.

Landscape 16:9

Ideal for: horizontal screens and websites.

Where to post:

  • YouTube: standard and long videos (excluding Shorts).

  • LinkedIn / Facebook: longer company videos or live broadcasts (lives).

  • Websites & Blogs: embedded videos, landing pages and website headers.

  • TVs & Display screens: corporate presentations, reception screens or events.

  • Emails / Newsletters: thumbnails and video links.

Portrait 9:16

Ideal for: an immersive experience on a smartphone (held vertically).

Where to post:

  • Instagram: Reels and Stories.

  • TikTok: all content on the platform.

  • Facebook: Reels and Stories.

  • Snapchat: Stories and native content.

  • WhatsApp: Status.

  • YouTube: Shorts.

Reduced portrait 4:5

Ideal for: making the most of the visual space in the mobile news feed without taking up the whole screen.

Where to post:

  • Instagram: News feed (single posts and carousels).

  • Facebook: mobile News feed.

  • LinkedIn: Mobile news feed (excellent click-through and engagement rates).

FAQ

1. Which format should I use for my listing website (real estate site)?

The Landscape 16:9 format. Download your Danim video in this format, publish it on YouTube, then embed it on your website.

2. Can I change the format chosen by Danim when posting?

Yes. Click Change format and choose another of your project's formats, then click Confirm.

3. A format is grayed out or shows "Format does not exist", what should I do?

Your project does not contain this format. A project includes all the formats of its template: if a format is grayed out in Change format, the template does not offer it. On a Story, the Format does not exist label means that your project has no Portrait 9:16 format.

For an older project, open it at the Sharing step, select the format above the preview, then click Generate videos (or Generate images) in the New format detected box.

4. Why has the vertical format (9:16) become so popular?

Today, the vast majority of users browse social media on their smartphone. The 9:16 format fills the whole vertical screen, which offers a 100% immersive experience and grabs attention immediately, without any distraction.

5. What if I import media from my device?

The automatic format choice only applies to Danim projects. Media imported from your device is posted in its original format: prepare it in the format suited to the target network, using the guide above.

Best practices 🎓

  • Think "mobile first". Favor the 9:16, 4:5 or 1:1 formats to take up as much screen space as possible.

  • Don't overlook safe zones. On Stories, Reels and TikTok formats (9:16), avoid placing text, logos or important information at the very bottom or very top of the image (areas often hidden by interaction buttons and captions).

  • Check the preview of each format in the Sharing step before posting: text that is easy to read in 16:9 may look smaller in 1:1.

  • Vary according to the audience and the network. Use 16:9 for your longer, corporate content (YouTube, website) and vertical formats (9:16, 4:5) for your dynamic content (Instagram, TikTok).
